The Mountain Laurel Designs Monk Tarp is about as simple as a shelter can be. In silnylon you get a single 9*5ft flat piece of material or a smaller 4*9ft piece should you chose cuben fibre. Cuben fibre is only available in smaller width rolls hence the foot difference between the tarps.

MLD monk tarp So earlier y'all helped me decide a tarp over a water proof bivy. Y'all are so helpful I've decided to ask if anyone has experience with the MLD monk tarp it seems like a good deal. I am mainly curious if there's a better priced option out there for a cuben fiber tarp.

Same here. I chose a MLD DCF .75 Grace custom sized 8'x6'x9.25' for many thrus including a PCT and CDT thru. I was still a neophyte budding ULer when I thrued the AT so had not yet developed the tarp chops. However, saying that is misleading in context of durability as on the PCT thru I only set the tarp up 5 times.

Ive been looking for a simple ultralight tarp that can take a bit of origami to make a half pyramid. The MLD Monk Tarp looked very nice but i didnt like the $90 + shipping and customs charges. I had some sil nylon in a nice subdued colour lying around so decided to have a crack at sewing one.

That pairing is a good combination in my view Steve. Elaborating a bit on what @paul says about the full mid shape. Assuming we're talking about the silnylon version of the MLD Monk, if you want to pitch the tarp as shown above with the front centre/apex height at about 1m and the sides of the tarp square to the rear edge, then the front corners will each need to be about 30cm off the ground.

The MLD Monk tarp is interesting but seems too similar to the poncho pitched as a half-mid. So like the Grace, I might as well get something that does double duty as rain gear. MLD makes a Pro Poncho and a Cuben Fiber Poncho that is smaller and maybe has less features.
